Today, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 13 inspection reports on residential centres for older people. HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with the Health Act (2007) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016, to ensure that the older people living in nursing homes are safe and well looked after.

One report refers to an 18-outcome inspection, six reports are 10-outcome inspections, three reports refer to dementia care thematic inspections, one report relates to a follow-up inspection and one report is for a single issue inspection.

Evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards was found in nine centres. These nine inspection reports show that residents’ needs were being met and the care delivered was safe, in line with the National Standards and regulations.

However, four reports found evidence of non-compliance. In these four centres, residents’ needs were not always being met and non-compliances were identified by inspectors in areas including safe and suitable premises; governance and management; and notification of incidents.
