Today, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 15 inspection reports on residential centres for older people.

HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with Health Act (2007) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016, to ensure that the health, wellbeing and quality of life of people in these services is promoted and protected.

Five reports refer to 18-outcome inspections, five are 10-outcome inspections, three relate to follow-up inspections carried out and two reports refer to dementia care thematic inspections.

Evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards was found in eight centres. These eight inspection reports show that residents’ needs were being met in line with the National Standards and regulations.

However, inspections in seven centres found that the residents’ needs were not always being met. Reported non-compliances were in areas such as government and management, safeguarding, social care needs, health and safety and risk management.
