Older people’s publication statement 8 March 2017

Date of publication:

The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has today published 20 inspection reports on residential settings for older people. HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with Health Act (2017) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016, to ensure that residents in nursing homes are safe and well looked after.

Eight reports refer to 18-outcome announced registration inspections; five reports relate to dementia care thematic inspections; five are 10-outcome inspections, and two are either follow-up or specific-issue inspections.

Evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards was found in 17 centres. These reports show that residents’ needs were being met in line with the requirements of the regulations and standards.

Three reports found evidence of non-compliance. In these three centres, residents’ needs were not always met and non-compliances were identified by inspectors in areas of safeguarding and safety, suitable staffing, and health and safety and risk management.
